The Marble Quarries: The Carrara marbles have been sampled at 90% to 99% CaCO3. This, along with the low amounts of magnesium, iron, silica, and aluminum, and the marble's high brightness, makes this deposit suitable for many specialized uses such as paper filler and coater and for the filler and extender markets where purity and whiteness are important. The black marble and the beds above are dolomite of excellent quality. They should be suitable for specialized refractory use. It is estimated that an average thickness of black plus white marble can be open pit mined to a depth of 160 feet or more on an area of 80 acres. At 12 cubic feet per ton in place, this calculates to approximately 47,000,000 tons. Various other colors of marble (tan, green, blue, etc.) are present, but their quantities have not been estimated. About 50 acres of sand and gravel, free of silt and clay, are found on the lower alluvial fans and valleys of the Carrara claims. |

Location: The claims are located approximately 105 miles north of Las Vegas, about 8 miles south of Beatty, 3 miles east of Highway 95, in Nye County, Nevada in an area commonly known as the Bare Mountain Quadrangle. The map below shows the location of Bare Mt., the site of the "Carrara" claims. Access to the property is a dirt and rock road extending approximately 3 miles from U. S. Highway 95 to the mouth of Carrara Canyon. The 10 Lode claims, each 600 feet by 1,500 feet were acquired in 1998 encompassing this road to ensure access to the 200 acres patented claim area. (For insurance and safety reasons, no one is allowed access to the site without one of the owners present. A tour can be arranged for qualified prospects with 2 days notice, and it includes lunch.)

The Gravel & Cement Sands: Bare Mountain is also one of the largest deposit of the type of raw materials (low iron calcium carbonate from limestone) used in manufacturing Portland cement in the western United States. A U. S. government report by Sandia Labs, New Mexico, in 1979 related to the MX missile project's potential use of cement products from Bare Mountain. This cement was proven superior in content. Approximately 50 acres of sand and gravel occur on the Carrara patent area. This sand and gravel is clean and free of the silt and clay that is mixed with the same type materials lower on the alluvial fans and in the valleys of the area. The thickness of the sand and gravel is not known well enough to make a firm estimate of quantity, however, an average thickness of 18 feet would be conservative. This projection would indicate the presence of about 1,500,000 yards or 2,250,000 tons of sand and gravel. |
